Venus Williams bowled out of the U.S. Open women’s singles on Thursday after an emotional first-round exit that also left Serena Williams feeling “hurt” and “sick” after a disappointing loss.

Williams, who had lost all three previous meetings with Serena at the tournament, dropped to her knees and bowed out of the US Open in the first round after defeating world No.3 and 11-time major title winner Angelique Kerber 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-1.

“It’s been a long time. It’s been a fun ride, and this is not what you want to do at the end of a long season,” Williams said of the three-month layoff from competition.

“I just really did not get the job done today.”

She said: “It hurts, it hurts, it hurts.”

As Williams entered the locker room, she was greeted by her mother, Mary, who stood at the door and embraced her daughter. Kerber embraced Williams as well, and they hugged briefly before each woman walked away.

Williams said she feels “completely exhausted” and the decision was hard.

“I’m emotionally depleted and really sad right now,” she said through tears. “But also, it hurts because you are not playing well, you are not competing well and it’s hard to accept because that’s the point in time when you are supposed to be trying really hard and
