What Ziwe and LaQuan Smith Wore to Club Moda Life
“I like a lot of different styles of [women’s] clothes, I’m not a stickler for what I wear, but I do like a lot of different styles of clothes,” says Smith. “I want to be comfortable in my own skin. I’m a really easygoing person and I like going out and having fun with people, so I’m more of a people person.” She’s also known in the boudoir community for wearing sexy gowns. When we stopped by her home in New York City, she was wearing a black thong with her hair piled on top of her head. While we’re not sure if we look that way in the mirror, she still looked great.
One of Smith’s biggest fashion influences is LaQuan Smith. “She’s my godmother, she’s my mentor. She’s like a surrogate sister,” LaQuan says.
The duo met at a school where they were both students attending the Fashion Institute of Technology. While they were in the school’s modeling program, Smith discovered LaQuan. “She was in the school’s fashion show so I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t know what to do,’ and I had to borrow her clothes,” LaQuan says. A few years later, they collaborated on a collaboration for Vogue.com.
“At that time she was still in the school’s fashion show so she had to borrow my clothes and I had to borrow hers, so I was like, ‘Okay, let’s figure this out and see what happens,'” LaQuan says. “So we just both wore the same dress, and I thought it would be really cute. She wore her dress to the Vogue.com show and I wore my own. We did exactly the same, but we looked totally different, but after the show, we had a lot of fun coming to the afterparty.
