Rafael Nadal says he and his family are ‘very well’ after birth of first child
Rafael Nadal said in a video message on Thursday that he and his wife, Maria Sharapova, are “very well” after the birth of their first child.

Rafael said he is “very happy” to be able to share the news with fans who he had previously thought wanted to see him retire.
“I am glad that everybody is happy and happy to see everybody being happy. I hope you’re happy, thank you very much,” he said in the video message.

Rafael also thanked the fans and said that he would like to continue doing what he does without any big plans.
“It was a very nice surprise and, I hope, it’s not a sad surprise,” he said.
“I had planned that I would play at least until May, June, July. I was going to play two or three months more, at least and that was going in my head when I was on holiday, and then I was going to do the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
“Because we play in two grand slams, we will be there at least in July. I’ll be there for Wimbledon. This is a good tournament, it’s a very good tournament.”
Meanwhile, Maria revealed she and Rafael welcomed their firstborn child last month and that she “feels like a new person.”
“I feel like [a new] person and a new woman, I have more energy,” Maria said at a charity event at The Mall in Rio de Janeiro where she sat alongside the former tennis greats.
Rafael also said last week that he wants to win as many tournaments as possible and make the world No. 1 ranking for the first time.
