Forbes named its annual Top 100 Companies and Top 25 Startups lists earlier this year, and each year, it has made its list of the “most valuable companies” and “most innovative companies” available on the Forbes Global 2000 list. Both lists are based on data obtained from Bloomberg Industries’ Global 500, which includes companies that report figures in both the Bloomberg Billionaires Index and the Forbes Global 2000.

The Forbes list is based on financial capital (as measured by the $10 billion market cap), net worth of the founder/chief executive, market growth, valuation, and industry revenue, as described by Forbes.
Forbes says the Forbes Global 2000 consists of 500 firms valued at $10 billion or more, and 400 firms valued at $1 billion or more. It excludes non-listed companies that do not participate in the Global 500, and which have no reported value. The Global 2000 is defined by Forbes as companies that report financial figures in the Forbes billionaires index and the total market value of all listed companies. It doesn’t include companies that only release an earnings announcement a few weeks after it’s fact, or companies reporting figures based on estimates, or companies that are reported to be “undervalued.”
The Financial Times’ Start-up 100 is based on the same information as the Forbes listing, but the Financial Times measures the start-up from the point of being founded, rather than after 12 months (as in Forbes). It excludes non-listed companies, but does include companies that never had their equity public.
