A Florida man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for a violent drive-by shooting that injured two people in an Orlando, Florida, parking lot.In March 2013, 23-year-old Anthony Hill, of Port Orange, Florida, drove through an electronic sign indicating someone inside a shopping center was having a sale and got in a dispute with a store owner. That dispute escalated into a physical altercation between Mr. Hill and the owner, according to the State Attorney’s Office.In the parking lot, someone shot at Mr. Hill from an SUV and wounded him in the hand and face. Mr. Hill was able to drive away and was treated for injuries at a hospital.Mr. Hill pleaded guilty to a single felony count of attempted murder in addition to charges of battery and aggravated assault in the shooting. He said he shot at the SUV because he feared for his life.In addition to a prison sentence, the Florida Department of Corrections ordered Mr. Hill to pay $25,000 in restitution to the store owner and $20,000 to the injured pedestrians and $15,000 to the victim of the shooting.At sentencing, Judge Carol-Lynn Riffer ordered Mr. Hill to spend at least 10 years in prison. Defense defense attorney Andrew M. Wirt told the court he would recommend a seven-year sentence. The prosecutor told the court that it was the rare case of self-defense. The judge did not address Mr. Wirt’s arguments.Defense attorney John T. Coughlin on behalf of Mr. Hill said he would be appealing the decision.Mr. Hill’s attorney, Steven A. Zinn, said he was disappointed with the judge. “I don’t think she understands self-defense,” he said. “I think she’s taking a short-sighted view in this particular case.”
